IOWA CITY– Steve Bergman and his West High Trojans had hoped to win an unprecedented fourth-straight Class 4A State Championship back in March, but were foiled by North Scott in the semifinal round and forced to settle for third place with a consolation round win over Des Moines Hoover.
Bergman, with 30 years of coaching under his belt, is in his 26th season at West and is well-positioned for another run at state with a well-seasoned, battle-tested corps of seniors.
Wali Parks, Devontae Lane, Tanner Lohaus and Alex Henderson are four of the five returning starters this season. Parks is a 6’-5” forward who averaged 10.9 points and 4.8 rebounds per game, Lane is a 6’-1” guard averaging 12.9 points and 3.3 rebounds per game, Lohaus, 6’-6”, averaged 11 points and 4.4 rebounds as a forward for West, while Henderson is a 6’-2” guard who averaged 6.2 points and 3.3 rebounds per game.
Connor McCaffery rounds out the returning starters as a 6’-5” junior guard who averaged 13 points and 4.7 rebounds.
Also returning are seniors David Pederson (6’-2” guard), Nate Barnes (6’-4” forward) and Dallas Majors (6’-2” guard). New to the squad are juniors Nate Disterhoft (6’-3” forward) and Alex Kleinow (6’-6” center), as well as freshman Patrick McCaffery (6’-6” forward).
The Trojans ended the season at 25-1, giving Bergman his 500th win in the process during the Des Moines Hoover game. Coaches Gordon Rundquist, Marty Hanrahan and Nate Frese will assist Bergman this season, which opens Tuesday, Nov. 24, with a jamboree at Cedar Rapids Jefferson. The first home game is set for Thursday, Dec. 3, against Mount Vernon with the varsity tip-off at 7:30 p.m.
