Welcome to Solon High School!
New student and freshman orientation will be held on Thursday, Aug. 16, from 7-8 p.m. If you would like to tour the building, you may stop in anytime after 6:30. Incoming ninth grade students should have received a copy of their schedule over the summer. New students will need to see Mr. Thompson, counselor, beginning Friday to create a schedule. Locker assignments will be unavailable until the first day of school as we are still registering new students.
Please contact high school principal Nathan Wear by email email@example.com or by phone at 319-624-2401 ext. 1103 with questions about the upcoming school year.
Join PTO today
Did you know each building in the Solon Community School District has its own Parent Teacher Organization? Lakeview and middle school PTOs hold meetings bi-monthly. The high school PTO communicates via e-mail.
Any parent/legal guardian of a student in the Solon school system can join PTO by filling out a registration form and returning it with the $10 annual dues payment, which includes a copy of the highly coveted student directory. PTO registration forms can found on the Solon schools website by following this link: http://www.solon.k12.ia.us/district/registration/documents/solon_pto.pdf. Forms will also be available at Unpack the Backpack Night at Lakeview and the middle school.
Solon PTOs promote communication, provide service and support, and work with the schools to provide quality education for all. A few of the ways PTOs met these goals during the past school year include sponsoring field trips, providing recess equipment and art supplies, improving the playground with new equipment, fulfilling teachers’ classroom wish lists, chaperoning lock-ins and dances, and funding special events like self defense instruction and science fairs.
This fall, all three PTOs will be increasing their fundraising efforts with a program called scrip. This exciting new opportunity will cost you nothing. Look for more information in next week’s Solon Economist.
If you have any questions about Solon’s PTOs, contact any of the following officers:
• Lakeview PTO president: Amy Kruse, firstname.lastname@example.org.
• Middle school PTO co-president: Brandi Radcliffe, email@example.com.
• High school PTO treasurer (presidency open): Michelle Kottenstette, firstname.lastname@example.org.
Solon seeking SIAC members
Solon Community School District parents and community members are invited to complete an application for membership on the School Improvement Advisory Committee (SIAC). SIAC is a board appointed committee that shall include students, parents, teachers, administrators, and representatives from the local community. To the extent possible, committee membership shall have balanced representation of the following: race, gender, national origin, and disability. Beginning in the 2011-2012 school year, this committee was required to include equal representatives of both genders. The School Improvement Advisory Committee makes recommendations to the board based on the committee analysis of the needs assessment data related to student learning goals and other educational needs. Applications are due Sept. 4 at 4 p.m. For more information or to apply, visit http://www.solon.k12.ia.us/district/board/csipsiac/ or contact Matt Townsley, director of instruction and technology at 319-624-3401, ext. 1352 or email@example.com
Notification test on Aug. 20
The Solon Community School District’s primary method to report school closings and delays is local television (KCRG, KGAN, and KWWL) and radio station (WMT, KHAK, KDAT, KRNA, KZIA, and KCJJ) announcements. The SchoolMessenger system is a secondary public announcement that delivers personalized phone, text message, and/or e-mail messages to parents, staff, or other groups via home, office, and/or cell phones. Parents/Guardians do not have to do anything to receive communications through this new system as it is pulled through information from our parent-student information system, PowerSchool.
An annual test of the SCSD email, phone and text notification system will take place on Monday, Aug. 20. at 6 p.m. For more information on SchoolMessenger or to customize your notification preferences, please visit http://www.solon.k12.ia.us/district/information/schoolmessenger/
