Volleyball opens season with quad meet Thursday

Lady Spartans look to replace 9 graduated seniors

SOLON– There will be a lot of shoes to fill for the Solon varsity volleyball team.
The squad graduated nine seniors, five of them starters in the varsity rotation.
Gone are seniors Taylor Moore, Raysa Garbes, Kate Benzing, Rachael Nelson, Hannah Kramer, Abby Smith, Taylor Noonan, Elli Becicka and Vanessa Milliman, as well as Lauren Schrock, the team’s leader in kills last year.
But third-year Solon Head Coach Sarah Ferin is looking forward to a good season.
“The seniors are ready to contribute after waiting behind a four-year starting class that graduated last year,” Ferin noted.
Two starters return, senior team captain Katie Yi and junior Kennedy Bombei.
Yi, a middle hitter, had the second-highest kill efficiency for the Lady Spartans last year (0.285) with 124 kills on 288 attack attempts. Yi was the squad’s leading blocker last year with 40 solo blocks and 30 assists. She was limited from the service line, going 15-18 with four aces.
Bombei, a setter, has amassed 358 assists backing up Nelson. She connected with 21 kills on 36 attack attempts and was 275-297 from the service stripe with 27 aces and added 123 digs.
Senior Jane Wilms will also be a returning letter winner for Solon. An outside hitter, Wilms had 25 kills for the Lady Spartans in 2018, was 8-9 with two aces from the service line, had 11 digs and seven total blocks.
Joining them will be sophomores Camryn Keith and Maddie Manifold, and freshman Delaney Bombei.
Keith, 5-10, is a quick, strong middle/right hitter, Ferin said, and a good blocker. Manifold, 5-8, is an outside hitter with a fast swing. Bombei, 5-11, is a good blocker, a middle/right hitter with long arms, and a strong swing, the coach noted.
Also on the roster for the Lady Spartans are seniors Miranda McHugh, Brooklyn Whitford, Gabbi Bullard, Khaylor Fleck and Emma Harris, and junior Sydney Langenberg.
Ferin predicted Cedar Rapids Xavier, Mount Vernon and Tipton to be the strongest teams in the area, with West Delaware and Mount Vernon again slugging it out for the top slot in the WaMaC Conference East Division with the Lady Spartans.
Solon finished 22-18 overall last season, and 3-3 in conference play.
Solon opens the 2019 season Thursday, Aug. 29, hosting a quad meet with Center Point-Urbana, Clear Creek Amana and Mount Vernon beginning at 6 p.m. in the Solon High School gymnasium.
After a pair of road invitationals, the Lady Spartans return home to host Mount Vernon Tuesday, Sept. 10.
