Volunteers invited to assist in prairie seed harvest in Johnson County
OXFORD, IA – The Johnson County Conservation Board (JCCB) is in the midst of a fall harvest and they need your help. The JCCB has a wealth of prairie plant seeds to bring in from the prairies this fall, but they lack the time and extra hands to do it alone. They are requesting your assistance at the following seed collection event on November 3rd beginning at 9 a.m. at F.W. Kent Park Knight Prairie Pavilion Parking Lot.
Prior to the event JCCB staff will discuss a few of the numerous plants from which seeds will be collected. Collection method will also be discussed. No experience is necessary to harvest prairie seed.
Prairie seed collection is a vital part of the prairie restoration efforts on Johnson County Conservation Board lands. Even with mechanical options to prairie seed harvest many situations still require manual harvest to protect highly erodible soil or to capture small seeds that can not be collected mechanically.
Volunteers interested in assisting with the harvests are encouraged to wear long sleeved shirts, long pants, and shoes appropriate for walking in tall grass. Participants are also encouraged to bring gloves.
