Women of Troy fall to out of state Raiders

Bollingbrook wins, 61-58 in OT

IOWA CITY– The Iowa City West High Women of Troy suffered their third loss of the season on Monday, Jan. 15, as the Raiders of Bollingbrook, Ill. spent part of Martin Luther King Jr. Day in an interstate varsity contest at West High. The Raiders knocked off the West High squad, 61-58, in overtime.
West took an 11-6 lead at the end of the first period and were ahead, 30-19, at halftime. Both teams scored 16 points in the third period as West held a 46-35 lead going into the final quarter. However, the Raiders mounted an 18-point offensive surge holding the Women of Troy to a mere seven points for a 53-53 tie at the end of regulation play. The Raiders outscored West High, 8-5, in the overtime period for the win.
Rachel Saunders was back up to full steam after recuperating from an injury and poured in a team-high 17 points, while Lauren Zacharias contributed a dozen and Logan Cook produced 10. Cailyn Morgan had a nine-point night with four points each from Emma Koch and Paige Beckner, while Matayia Tellis put up two points. Cook drained two 3-point baskets for West with one each from Morgan, Zacharias and Saunders. Tellis, Zacharias, Saunders and Koch had four rebounds apiece.
Two of West’s three losses came from out-of-state opponents, with the first coming from Hopkins, Minn., the second loss from crosstown rival City High and the third at the hands of Bollingbrook. West sat at 10-3 after the Raiders sailed back to Illinois.
Cedar Falls (13-1 as of Thursday, Jan. 18) visits the Women of Troy on Friday, Jan. 26, ahead of a Saturday, Jan. 27, road trip to Peoria, Ill., to take on Montini Catholic at Bradley University’s Renaissance Coliseum. West heads for Dubuque Senior on Tuesday, Jan. 30, to take on the Rams.
