Women of Troy roll over the River Queens

10-0 regional semifinal leads to 4-1 final win and Des Moines

IOWA CITY– Iowa City West High’s Women of Troy earned a trip to Des Moines and the 2017 Class 3A State Soccer Tournament, which kicks off Thursday, June 8, and runs through Saturday, June 10, at the Cownie Soccer Complex in southeast Des Moines.
West disposed of the Clinton River Queens 10-0 Wednesday, May 31, in a Class 3A Region 7 semifinal at home on Barker Field with Carlin Morsch, a junior, stunning the Queens with a goal in the first minute of play. Leah Rhodes banged one in at the sixth minute, Regan Steigleder hit the first of her four goals in the 13th minute while Emma Cooper sank the first of two goals six minutes later to make it 4-0. Steigleder’s second goal in the 24th minute gave West High a 5-0 lead going into halftime.
Steigleder struck three minutes into the second half to make it 6-0, Cooper’s second goal came a minute later and Steigleder’s fourth goal hit in the 51st minute. Cooper completed the hat trick eight minutes later with Lizzie Raley finishing the match due to the 10-goal mercy rule with just over six minutes remaining.
The win advanced the 16-1 Women of Troy to a Monday, June 5, regional final at home against 9-8 Cedar Rapids Prairie. The Prairie Hawks defeated Cedar Rapids Washington 1-0 in a regional semifinal, also on May 31.
West knocked off the Prairie Hawks 4-1, with Leah Rhodes striking first for West with 11 seconds remaining in the first half. Rhodes scored with an assist from Cooper for a 1-0 halftime lead. Lexi Shaffer made it 2-0 with a 50-foot torpedo shot, but the Prairie Hawks refused to go quietly into the night and cut the gap with a goal. Steigleder bombed the Hawks off an assist from Morsch to make it 3-1 and Rachel Olson fired in the final shot making it 4-1.
The Women of Troy (17-1) will face Des Moines Dowling Catholic (12-5) at 5:30 p.m. on Field 6 in Des Moines June 8. The semifinal round is set for Friday, June 9, at 5:15 p.m. on Field 6 and the championship will be Saturday, June 10, at 4 p.m. on Field 9. West High is the No. 2 seed behind West Des Moines Valley (14-3).
