IOWA CITY– The West High Women of Troy repelled a threat from the Mustangs of Dubuque Hempstead Tuesday, Jan. 8, pulling off a 55-46 MVC victory on their home court.
Laynie Whitehead put West on the scoreboard early in the first period, and West took a 9-1 lead prompting the Mustangs to call for a time-out. Ally Disterhoft hit the first of two 3-pointers late in the quarter for a 16-7 lead. The Mustangs galloped back in the second, out-scoring West 13-11. West held a 27-20 lead at the half, with 12 of those points coming from Disterhoft.
Hempstead continued to pressure West in the third quarter but the home team kept their lead and took the period, 41-32. That lead eroded in the fourth as the Mustangs narrowed the gap to 6 points with 2:32 remaining. A bucket and a foul cut the gap to 3 points. However, a series of Hempstead fouls put Disterhoft on the free throw line for 5 points, and Mikaela Morgan sealed the win with a layup in the final minute.
Disterhoft led all with a game-high 22 points, Morgan had 10, Whitehead and Danielle Craig put in 8 each. Craig also had a pair of 3-pointers. Lauren Larson scored 3 points; Grace Tafolla and Mollie Mason had 2 apiece. The win improved West’s record to 8-3 while Hempstead dropped to 5-7.
The Women of Troy are on the road with appearances at Waterloo East on Friday, Jan. 18, and Cedar Rapids Kennedy on Tuesday, Jan. 22. The team returns to the home hardwood on Friday, Jan. 25, as Cedar Rapids Prairie visits. The next day, an afternoon matinee is on-tap as Davenport Assumption comes for a 3:30 p.m. tip-off.
