IOWA CITY– Iowa opened the Big Ten season by beating Wisconsin 24-12 on Friday and then crushing Illinois 32-4 on Sunday.
I wasn’t real impressed with the win over the Badgers even though Brent Metcalf had a pin at 149, Daniel Dennis had a 19-4 tech fall at 133 and Phil Keddy won a 17-4 major at 184.
Alex Tsirtsis lost his second match 5-0 to Zach Tanelli. The Hawkeyes also lost two matches by one point with Ryan Morningstar losing 4-3 in overtime and Chad Betty losing 2-1 to Dallas Herbst, who is ranked third in the country.
The Hawkeyes turned up the heat against the Fighting Illini with two major decisions and another pin by Brent Metcalf.
“We made progress and I’ll give our guys credit,” said Iowa head coach Tom Brands. “But we have to be in every match in order to keep making that progress.”
Alex Tsirtsis bounced back with a 11-3 major at 141. Alex has a shot at winning it all if he keeps attacking like he did Sunday.
Jay Borschel, who has a tendency to start slow at 174, finished strong wining another major by 10-1 and what else can you say about Brent Metcalf. He had his second straight pin, is the hardest working wrestler and believe it or not, is getting better. The other great thing is that he is only a junior.
The Hawkeyes are picking up momentum and if everyone can stay healthy will be favored in the tough Big Ten meet and the NCAA championships.
