SOLON– Solon’s Lady Spartan soccer team picked up three home wins last week.
Score early, score big was Solon’s theme Tuesday, May 10, at home against Western Dubuque. Only 29 seconds ticked off the clock before Alison McKinnie scored from well into left field. By halftime the score was 9-0 with McKinnie chalking up five goals, Danielle Herdliska adding two and Anna Seydel and Tori Takes zipping in a goal apiece. Not long into the second half, Jackie Meyer tipped in the final goal to end the game at 10-0. Keeper Nikki Sedlacek had a very light day but did get make a wonderful save in the second half with the assistance of Katie Silberstein. Tori Takes, Abby Haas, Sadie Walkner and Herdliska each had an assist.
Solon 3, Mt. Vernon 0
The Lady Spartans took off to a slow start against Mt. Vernon on Friday, May 13. The Spartans had plenty of shots on goal in the first half, but couldn’t find the net. Early into the second half, Danielle Herdliska drove one into the goal off an Alison McKinnie assist. McKinnie scored again not much further into the half. Solon’s final score for the day came from an assist from Herdliska to McKinnie to finish off the game and a 3-0 win.
The junior varsity (JV) squad won its match by a 3-0 margin as well.
Solon 10, Anamosa 0
The Spartans came ready to play Saturday morning again Anamosa. As the rain began in earnest during the second half, Solon ended the game early with a 10-0 score. Alison McKinnie scored five goals. Tori Takes contributed two goals. Danielle Herdliska, Anna Seydel and Brianna Pike each shot in an additional goal. Herdliska ended with four assists and McKinnie added two.
The JV team lost a battle 0-2.
