SOLON– Who wanted the win more?
It turns out that Solon definitely did.
The Solon girls’ soccer team met up against the Regina Regals last Friday in a 2-1 regional semifinal win. Solon advanced to the regional final Monday in Eldridge against Center Point-Urbana and a chance for a state tournament bid.
The Regals stepped up with an early goal and kept that lead through the entire first half.
But the highlights belonged to the defensive line of Mallory Hufford, Katherine Carr, Sadie Walkner, Katie Silberstein and Allie Mercer and some magnificent saves by keeper Nikki Sedlacek.
Solon considers itself a second-half team and that proved to be true for this match-up.
Less that two minutes after half-time, Sedlacek cleared a nice save. Solon drove the ball up to Alison McKinnie, who took the ball the rest of the way up the field, made herself an opening and fired the ball into the goal to tie the score at 1-1.
That stalemate continued, with each team taking multiple shots on goal, until the final minutes of the game.
With under two minutes left in the game, Regina gave Solon the opportunity for a corner kick, which has been one of Solon’s most successful scoring techniques this season.
McKinnie placed a perfect ball directly in front of the goal and Danielle Herdliska took the head shot that sent it flying in for the winning score.
