NORTH LIBERTY– The North Liberty Police Department apprehended three individuals suspected in a home invasion and robbery Friday morning.
North Liberty Police Chief Jim Warkentin said North Liberty officers responded to a report of a home invasion at 745 N. Front St. at 10:10 a.m. Friday, Dec. 16, where property was taken from the residence. The victim told police she was assaulted, and the suspects indicated they were armed with handguns.
North Liberty officers located the suspects’ car on Mehaffey Bridge Road near Solon, and conducted a felony traffic stop. Three suspects were taken into custody on the scene.
The suspects were subsequently charged with criminal activity. Arrested were David Tylon Thomas, 34, of 844 E. 21st St., Hopkinsville, Ky., charged with Burglary1st Degree; Gregory Deshon Woods, 38, of 17501 Lowell Lane, Hazelcrest, Ill., charged with Burglary 1st Degree; and Brandon Lee Pittman, 24 of 2406 Bartelt Rd., Iowa City, charged with Aiding and Abetting Burglary 1st Degree.
No weapons were found upon police search of the vehicle.
The activity during the arrest on Mehaffey Bridge Road distracted a couple of passing drivers, resulting in a rear-end collision.
“Unfortunately, someone stopped to see if she could help,” Warkentin said. “I came around to the back of the truck to indicate she should keep going, and when I turned away, I heard the squealing tires and a crash.”
The driver who stopped was rear-ended by a vehicle driven by Jo Hunt of Solon. Her husband, Milt, was a passenger in her vehicle.
“Luckily, no one was hurt in the accident,” said Warkentin.
The victim of the home invasion was treated for minor injuries at the scene.
The North Liberty Police Department was assisted at the scene by numerous units from the Johnson County Sheriff’s Department, the Iowa City and Coralville police departments and the Iowa State Patrol.
