SOLON– It was a spectacular show.
The Solon High School Dance Team invited five other high school dance, pom and cheer squads and dancers from North Liberty’s Just for Kix programs in the eighth annual Dance Spectacular in Solon on Friday, Feb. 17.
Over 200 dancers in the various groups took turns showing off their best moves to music in front of a packed house for a two-hour dance extravaganza at the Spartan Gym.
Featured throughout the program were solos by Solon dancers Kaytee Berstler, Maiya Cervantez, Kelsey Karsten and Alex Smith. Another highlight was a glow-in-the-dark performance by Solon’s Kindergarten through sixth grade guests.
Solon’s 2011-2012 Dance Team has received several honors and acknowledgements so far this year, including: Division I ratings in the Iowa State Dance Team Association’s (ISDTA) competitions in the Solo category (Kaytee Berstler); the Class 3 Kick category; and the Large School Lights category. The team also earned the ISDTA’s Academic Excellence Award and the Highest Community Service Recognition. Freshman Alex Smith won fifth place for a solo in the All Iowa Open dance competition, and the team won an excellence ribbon for their home routine and 13 drill down ribbons from the Universal Dance Association. In addition, juniors Kelsey Karsten, Sarah Lilleodden and Caroline Wilford have been invited to dance in the 2012 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.
Also on the agenda were performances by the North Liberty Just For Kix classes, coached by Solon graduates and dance alumni Kierstin Appleby and Emily Janecek. The 16-member Solon High School Dance Team is coached by Marjorie Lane.
