IOWA CITY– The teachers’ union collectively bargained in Iowa City last month for a 4.2 percent raise, ratifying a new contract with the Iowa City Community School District.
Iowa City Education Association bargaining representative Tom Yates, who claimed to have the power to say yes, no, or maybe as a negotiator for the teachers, said the two sides had easily reached the agreement because of their thoroughness and clarity.
“We don’t have a lot of issues of people feeling their being taken advantage of from either side,” he said.
Yates said the mutual process of collective bargaining helps to ensure fair and equal pay for women. He noted that, on average, women in America make only 79 cents for every dollar earned by their male counterparts.
The salaries will place the Iowa City school district among the highest in the state for starting pay. Teachers with masters-level education coursework and certifications will also get a small increase as per the agreement.
