Betty May Hamilton, 85, of Elkhorn, Neb., formally of Iowa City and Torrance, Calif., passed away peacefully Sunday, March 17, 2013, with her family by her side.
A graveside service was held Saturday, March 23, at Oak Hill Cemetery in Coralville, with Pastor Jeff Tackaberry officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Girl Scouts of Eastern Iowa and Western Illinois.
Betty was born in Fairfield, Ill. on Aug. 16, 1927, the second child of Maurice and Catherine Wilson. When Betty was 12 the family moved to Loveland, Colo. In 1945, she graduated from Loveland High School and that summer she moved to Denver, and eventually worked as a secretary for Texaco Oil Company where she met Donald Hamilton. They wed on April 22, 1956. Texaco transferred the family to Los Angeles, Calif., where she had a long and fruitful administrative career and retired from the Torrance Unified School District. She moved to Solon in 1997 to take care of her husband, who passed away in 2002.
Betty later moved to Nebraska.
Survivors include her daughter Teri (Tyson) Hamilton-Garrett of Iowa City; her daughter Cheri Keffer of Omaha, Neb.; her grandchildren, Susan (Jarrod) of Lutherville, Md., Kristian and Alexi Garrett of Iowa City, and Melanie Keffer of Omaha, Neb.; her great-grandchildren Chloe and Hailey Lynch of Lutherville, Md.; and her good friends in Colorado, California and Nebraska.
