IOWA CITY– The Lady Spartans outscored their opponents 66-15 last week, but had another loss at the hands of Dallas Center-Grimes to drop their overall record to 25-2.
Solon climbed to the No. 2 spot in the rankings for Class 4A Thursday after rolling through road doubleheaders with Central DeWitt and Independence.
The Spartans rattled the Sabres 10-3 and 16-0, and dismantled Indee 14-1 and 10-3.
Solon then split a pair of games while participating in the Clear Creek Amana Tournament, defeating Fairfield 12-3 and falling to Dallas Center-Grimes 5-4.
The Lady Spartans had a chance to pull it out in a game that featured most of its scoring in the final two frames. Scoreless through three, Solon took the lead in the fourth inning, only to have Dallas Center knot it up in the fifth. Dallas Center came back for three runs in the bottom of the sixth off starter Emily Ira, but the Lady Spartans tied it in the top of the seventh, only to see it slip away in the bottom half.
It was the only game of the week that didn’t feature an offensive barrage from Solon.
In the game against Fairfield Friday, the Lady Spartans scored 12 runs on 17 hits, including two doubles by Ali Herdliska. Emma Rickels went 2-4 with three RBI.
Against Central DeWitt and Independence, Solon averaged almost 34 at-bats per game.
In Monday’s romps against the Sabres, the Lady Spartans scored 26 runs on 26 hits, including 11 doubles (three belonged to shortstop Mallory Madsen). Holly Hinkel allowed only four hits in the first game, while Ira allowed only a single hit and no runs while striking out four in the second game.
At Independence, Solon scored 24 runs on 36 hits, including a three-run homer by Herdliska. Ira took the win on the mound in the first game, while Hinkel struck out four in the second game.
The Lady Spartans were scheduled to play at Anamosa Monday, then host their own tournament Friday and Saturday.
