IOWA CITY– It’s been a rough season for the West High Women of Troy, but a postseason surge has led to a streak of three consecutive wins and a trip to a Class 5A regional final.
West blasted Cedar Rapids Kennedy Thursday night, July 11, at home, 11-0, in five innings. Morgan Ryan had a triple and Michaela Recker knocked out a double as West put up 13 hits. Erin Kallsen had three singles while Lauren Larson, Taylor Libby and Adara Opiola had a pair of base hits each.
Jesse Harder went the distance in the circle giving up only one hit and issuing six strikeouts.
The Women of Troy had two runs in the first inning followed by a six-run barrage in the third and followed up with three runs in the fourth.
Saturday night, the West crew traveled across town to face City High again in a semifinal game. It was the third meeting of the squads this season, with City taking the first, 2-1, back in June. West clobbered City, 15-5, on July 3 and delivered a 12-1 pounding in five innings to end the Little Hawks’ season Saturday.
Opiola belted out a pair of home runs, and Madi Miller added one of her own to help the Women of Troy. Opiola drove in four runs, Miller RBI’d three and Grace Tafolla had two RBI. Larson had a pair of doubles in the effort as well.
Again, Harder was the go-to pitcher for West, giving up four hits and one earned run while striking out two.
The wins boosted West to a 22-19 record as they prepared to face Ottumwa in Ottumwa on Tuesday, July 16, for the regional final. The Bulldogs were at 34-6 and ranked third in Class 5A by the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union.
