The Solon Community school board members, faculty and staff wish to welcome students and parents back for this school year. Please feel free to contact your school attendance center or a particular teacher throughout the year if you have a question or concern. All teachers can be reached through email which you can find under staff directory on our website. We are here to serve the district’s educational needs. Please take the time to explore our school website calendar for upcoming events such as: sporting events, band performances, concerts and building specific events.
The Solon board of education meeting is scheduled for Monday, Sept. 16, in the central office conference room.
Solon Community School District parents and community members are invited to complete an application for membership on the school improvement advisory committee. SIAC is a board appointed committee that shall include students, parents, teachers, administrators, and representatives from the local community. To the extent possible, committee membership shall have balanced representation of the following: race, gender, national origin and disability. Beginning in the 2011-2012 school year, this committee was required to include equal representatives of both genders. The School Improvement Advisory Committee makes recommendations to the board based on the committee analysis of the needs assessment data related to student learning goals and other educational needs. The application deadline is Wednesday, Sept. 11. If you have not registered your children for school this fall, please complete the process immediately. All families are to use the E-Registration. Please contact the school if you need your students’ access IDs and passwords and RevTrak ID for payment. Families who have not paid the school fees must contact the central office, 319-624-3401, ext. 1349 to set up a payment plan. Failure to do so may result in the account being turned over to small claims court.
Individual school pictures will be taken a little later in the school year now on Wednesday, Sept. 18, by Lifetouch Photography. Several package options are available through a prepayment-money back guaranteed plan. Complete information will be distributed the first full week of school. All checks must be made payable to Lifetouch Photography.

Adults present in the school buildings during regular student attendance time (8 a.m. until 4 p.m.) will be required to wear a name badge. For staff, these name badges will include photo identification. Other adults entering the building during student attendance time will be required to check into the office to receive a visitor’s pass.
Families who desire competent private instruction need to contact the central office for the proper forms which must be returned within 14 calendar days of removing your child from Solon schools. If you are enrolling in a home school assistance program please notify the school district if you plan to dual enroll.
The last date for regular open enrollment is March 1, 2014 for the 2014-2015 school year. A high school student who open enrolls is ineligible for varsity athletic competition during the student’s first 90 consecutive school days of enrollment in the receiving district.
An adult activity ticket has 10 punches and is good for all athletic activities except tournaments. These tickets are $45 each and may be picked up in the high school office or at upcoming sporting events. Also available is the family activity pass. Check with the high school activities office if interested.
Residents of the school district who are 65 years of age or older may receive lifetime passes to all school events (except tournaments). If you are eligible for the pass, please contact the high school activities office.
All athletes must have a physical examination completed before he/she will be allowed to participate or practice. School physical forms are available on the school’s web site under registration.
Numerous federal and state laws require school districts to provide students, parents, and/or the public with annual notices. You will find the school district’s annual notices listed on the school website under the tab information then notices.
The first meeting of the Lakeview PTO is Thursday, Sept. 5, in the Lakeview Media Center beginning at 7 p.m. and childcare will be provided. We hope you will join us as we plan activities to benefit Lakeview children and staff.
Thank you to the 35 eighth graders who sacrificed their last day of summer vacation to welcome our incoming fifth graders and students new to Solon Middle School) SMS at Monday’s orientation. Their leadership and positive modeling made for a great day and provided the fifth graders with some familiar faces for their first day at SMS.

Tech Club: Tuesdays starting Aug. 27 at 7:30 a.m. in the Media Center.
Chess Club: Thursdays starting Aug. 29 at 7:30 a.m. in the Media Center.
Jr. Optimist: Early dismissal days starting Sept. 5 from 1 until 2 p.m.
Earth Club: second Wednesday of every month starting Sept. 11 from 3:30 until 4:30 p.m.
Robotics: Mondays and Thursdays from 3:30 until 6 p.m.
Girls on the Run: Tuesdays and Fridays from 3:30 until 4:45 p.m.
Physicals and Concussion Forms: Required by all students participating in a school sponsored sport.
Immunization: For the 2013-2014 school year, and all future school years, all students entering seventh grade will need proof of an adolescent tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis (whooping cough) booster immunization (called “Tdap”) for school in the fall. Without this documentation, your son or daughter will not be allowed to participate in education at Solon. Contact your doctor for a copy of your child’s immunizations including the Tdap vaccine. Morning drop off: Please remind your child to be cautious during the morning drop off. Crosswalks are located at both of the stop signs.
Bikes: Those riding bikes to school should get off and walk them to and from the crosswalks.
Recycle your small electronics: Bring in your old cell phones, laptops, toner cartridges, digital cameras, MP3 players and more to keep them out of landfills and raise funds for the SMS Earth Team. This recycling fundraiser has raised over $500 dollars and has helped fund green projects for the school. Please turn in your electronics to the office.

Each year the junior class sponsors Solon High School’s prom. As a part of this event, every junior is required to either work a shift at the concession stand for a home football game or pay $25 in class dues. If a student is unable to work (due to football, band, cheerleading, etc.), a parent, sibling or friend may work the shift in his/her place. Sign up with Mr. Koza in room 106. It is a first come first serve basis so sign up early to ensure a spot. There are two shifts per game. Working the athletic booster concession stand does not meet this requirement.
This year’s homecoming activities will include the parade on Wednesday, Sept. 18, beginning at 7 p.m., football game with CCA on Friday, Sept. 20, followed by the Homecoming dance on Saturday, Sept. 21, in the high school gym, 9 p.m. until midnight.
