WILLIAMSBURG– The Lady Spartans are now the No. 1 team in Class 4A volleyball, the team everyone else will want to knock off.
And indeed, Solon encountered its first loss of the season over the weekend against un-ranked Linn-Mar as part of that team’s home tournament Saturday.
Linn-Mar dispatched Solon 21-18, 21-18 in the quarterfinals of the tournament. Solon defeated Waterloo East (21-13, 21-9), Muscatine (22-20, 21-17) and rolled over Marion (21-13, 21-9) over the course of the tournament.
Game statistics were not available as of press time.
Earlier in the week, the Lady Spartans began a week of road games, sweeping both Maquoketa (25-11, 25-23, 25-20) and Williamsburg (25-16, 25-23, 25-15).
At Maquoketa last Tuesday, Solon’s serves continued to pose a dilemma for the opposing team.
The Lady Spartans dished up 13 aces for the three-game match, led by senior Katie Silberstein with six and junior Jordan Smith with four. Silberstein was 18-19 from behind the service line.
Vik Meade led the team with eight kills, but the net play was diverse, with Kendra Cave (seven), Jordan Smith (six) and Jordan Runge (five) all contributing.
Taylor Nearad led the team with 26 assists while Rylee Smith had 14 digs. Maegan Bruene had two solo blocks.
The Lady Spartans return home this week for matches against Dyersville Beckman (Tuesday, Sept. 17) and Western Dubuque (Tuesday, Sept. 24).
